Director of Finance

Position Title: Director of Finance

Status: Full Time, salaried. FLSA status: exempt. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.

Salary: $60,000-$70,000 annual salary range.

Benefits: Paid holidays and Paid Time Off. Health and dental insurance (Market Umbrella funds 75%); vision, life, AD&D and short term disability insurance (Market Umbrella funds 100%). 401K retirement plan (up to 4% Market Umbrella annual match). FSA (125 plan) and HSA: eligible on the following month after a 1 month waiting period.

About Market Umbrella:

Market Umbrella is a 25-year-old community non-profit that operates the Crescent City Farmers Markets, provides community education related to nutrition and healthy eating, and offers a robust array of food access programs. Our work supports Southeast Louisiana foodways and culture, serves as a small business incubator and supporter of the local economy, and provides food access programs to help all New Orleanians have greater access to fresh, local foods. The Crescent City Farmers Market operates weekly farmers markets in the New Orleans area, hosting over 60 local small farmers, fishers, and food producers, and more than 100,000 shoppers annually. While the pandemic has shifted the market experience, Market Umbrella has pivoted around new approaches for engaging the community, including walk-up and drive-thru markets, at-home food box delivery, and food access programming.

General Position Description:

This full-time staff member is responsible for advancing the mission of Market Umbrella through managing its overall development, sponsorship and financial operations. This position oversees the development, finance, budgeting, human resources, and administration aspects of the organization. The Director of Finance works with a team of support staff and consultants and reports directly to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

25% Grants Management

  • Synthesize all financial reports for donors and other grantors, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.
  • Works with Executive Director on new grant projects, managing existing grants, grant reporting, and assisting with grant writing as needed.
  • Creates grant budgets and budget justifications.

25% Business Operations

  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors, the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Maintain relationships with brokers, insurance companies and risk retention groups for required insurances: liability, officers and employee insurances (health, dental, vision, accidental death and life).
  • Maintain all necessary business licenses, permits, reports and other filings.
  • Supervise all procurement functions, contract management, invoicing and collections.
  • Develop and administer all human resources and administrative policies and procedures, including payroll and benefits administration.
  • Manage all employee payroll and subcontractor payment transactions; ensure that Bi-weekly employee payroll is completed on time and accurately and employee insurance and benefits information is up-to date and complete.
  • Invoice all farmers market vendors for their weekly market fees.

25% Financial Reporting

  • Create and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Schedules monthly finance committee meetings, ensuring members receive needed information as requested.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning processes in conjunction with the Executive Director; administers and reviews all financial plans and make adjustments when necessary; keeps the Executive Director and Board of Directors abreast of the organization’s financial status and mitigate any potential financial risks.
  • Creates and implements all necessary business policies, procedures and accounting practices.

10% Supervise the Business Coordinator

  • Ensure that market closeouts are completed and entered into QuickBooks.
  • Complete market token verifications.
  • Supervise credit card reconciliation reports.
  • Double check all journal entries entered by Business Coordinate are done timely and correct.
  • Conduct performance reviews annually, or as needed.
  • Assist them with facilitation online SNAP reimbursements to farmers market vendors.
  • Ensure that the market fee payment tracker is being updated timely.
  • Ensure that Marketeers Liability and Market Discrepancy spreadsheets are updated timely.
  • Ensure that bank deposits are taken to the bank on a weekly basis.

10% Human Resources management for Market Umbrella

  • Conduct on-boarding and separations for all staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Maintain employee files with up-to-date personal and banking information.
  • Oversee company health, dental, life insurance, 401K, and FSA plan information and elections.
  • Post job descriptions and conduct applicant screenings as needed.

5% Other duties as assigned

Assuming and completing other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary by the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

Three to five years of non-profit finance management experience required. CPA preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or related field with at least 9 credit hours of formal accounting training, plus relevant work experience in grant administration, budgeting and cash-flow management needed. Proficiency and experience with personal computers using Microsoft (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), Quickbooks, Crescent Payroll system, Salesforce and other software programs. Willingness to become knowledgeable of new software products as deemed necessary by the Executive Director.


  • Demonstrates flexibility in working in a team environment while showing patience, creativity and integrity.
  • Self-starter who is able to work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to change work processes to compliment new technologies and innovations.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy of work is essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, electronically, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with the staff of Market Umbrella. Willingness to work irregular hours and weekends as necessary.
