Programs Manager

Position Title: Programs Manager

Status: Full Time, salaried. FLSA status: exempt. Some evenings and weekend hours are required. Outdoor market work required.

Salary: $40,000-$50,000 annual salary range.

Benefits: Paid holidays and Paid Time Off. About Market Umbrella:

Market Umbrella is a 25-year-old community non-profit that operates the Crescent City Farmers Markets, provides community education related to nutrition and healthy eating, and offers a robust array of food access programs. Our work supports Southeast Louisiana foodways and culture, serves as a small business incubator and supporter of the local economy, and provides food access programs to help all New Orleanians have greater access to fresh, local foods. The Crescent City Farmers Market operates weekly farmers markets in the New Orleans area, hosting over 60 local small farmers, fishers, and food producers, and more than 100,000 shoppers annually. While the pandemic has shifted the market experience, Market Umbrella has pivoted around new approaches for engaging the community, including walk-up and drive-thru markets, at-home food box delivery, and food access programming.

General Position Description:

This full-time staff member is responsible for implementing and expanding food access programming of Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market (CCFM). The Programs Manager works with a team of market staff and reports directly to the Director of Programs.

The Programs Manager works to provide programming focused on topics critical to Market Umbrella’s key priorities including supporting regional foodways, local food access, nutrition education, small business development and entrepreneurship, addressing environmental concerns, and the local economy.

Specific programs currently include: Market Match, Market Mommas Club, Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Meet Me at the Market. In this role, the Programs Manager is responsible for:

  • Conducting community outreach to raise awareness of Market Umbrella programs and social benefit currencies and other incentive programs at the market which can include issuing and explaining incentives, tabling events, attending community meetings, distributing and collecting yard signs, flyering, etc.
  • Assisting with the implementation of the Market Match SNAP incentive program and working to increase monthly SNAP transactions at all CCFMs through curriculum implementation and partner collaboration, including SNAP-Education activities such as market tours, cooking demos, recipes, tastings, budgeting and storage tips, etc.
  • Implementing the WIC Market Mommas Club breastfeeding incentive program, offering the program to mothers and mothers-to-be enrolled in the Louisiana Medicaid program in conjunction with other community partners.
  • Assisting with outreach to increase utilization of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program for both Seniors and WIC shoppers, including assisting with the coordination of pop-up markets to encourage redemption.
  • Assisting with Meet Me at the Market activities at our markets; responsible for outreach, scheduling visits, follow up surveying, curriculum development/revision, partner communications for the program, and performing classroom visits including preparing and gathering materials, activities, administration.
  • Providing setup assistance at market including setting up tents, umbrellas and tables, signage at demonstration tables and at vendor tents, prepping produce for tastings and other market activities, procuring giveaway produce, stuffing produce bags for giveaways, etc. for programming such as SNAP-Education and Meet Me at the Market field trip days.
  • Staffing CCFM market operations as needed.
  • Assuming and completing other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary by the Director of Programs and Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least two years of professional work experience. A bachelor’s degree or work experience in public health, education, agriculture or social work preferred. Spanish and/or Vietnamese language skills a plus. Some professional work experience in nutrition program education, particularly with vulnerable populations, strongly preferred.

Experienced with working with a wide variety of people in a professional context, deadline-oriented self-starter, detail oriented, effective written communications skills. Staff are currently working remotely, but in future an ability to work in an open-office environment with a highly collaborative team is required.

Some time spent working outdoors at farmers markets, year round, rain or shine, is required. Ability to lift 40 lb.s repeatedly, and maintain a positive customer service attitude. Must have reliable transportation. This position is generally a Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm position, but some evenings and weekends will be required. Program-related work often occurs at farmers markets, which often occur during evenings and weekends.
