Bean Madness is Back! | March 18, 2019

Fresh & Local:

Bean Madness is Back!

The Krewe of Red Beans has launched a spoof of the college-basketball March Madness tournament called "Bean Madness". Thirty-two NOLA chefs and restaurants will be competing to see who makes the best red beans. Judging takes place in the form of 31 single-elimination tastings that will occur all over New Orleans from March 20th to April 8th.

The event raises money for New Orleans nonprofits, including Market Umbrella and Crescent City Farmers Market! To donate, visit www.redbeansnola.com and create a "bracket" - which is you predicting who will win each match. It’s a fun way to follow the tournament, and if you fill out a bracket and donate, then you might win the grand prize-- lots of restaurant gift cards + a prize package from Camellia Beans, Cajun Country Rice, and the Krewe of Red Beans!

When you donate, you will have the option to give your donation to the market! Just click on our logo :) It takes just a few minutes and is a fun way to support your favorite farmers market.

Market+ WIC Program Sign Up at Market!

We are still enrolling for our Market+ WIC program, where we give WIC recipients $48 per month in fruit and veggie vouchers. WIC is a supplemental nutrition program for pre- and postpartum moms and families with children under five who meet designated income requirements. Our Market+ program increases the buying power of WIC shoppers by giving them extra money to spend on fruits and vegetables from our markets. Those who have not participated in the program in the past and who utilize Orleans Parish WIC offices may come to any of our markets to sign up. Help us spread the word and increase access to fresh, local produce for everyone in our community!

Coupons are good for fruits, vegetables, fresh herbs, and honey, and are a great way to bring new shoppers to the farmers market.

Stop and Smell the Flowers

What some people call self-care I think of as life choices that allow me to spend time with people I love, do meaningful work that I enjoy, and eat good food. My wife Cheryl and I are lucky to be able to work together, which is generally an amazing gift. Not only does it allow us to spend a LOT of time together, it also allows us to take care of each other. During our work day, Farm Lunch is an important part of our self care routine, a tradition that has carried over from the last farm that Cheryl managed. We always have a hot meal, featuring the food we grow. And at the end of the day, I usually feel like I’ve accomplished something, which has not always been the case at other jobs I’ve had. And when I’m not working, I can typically be found canoodling with our dogs.

Tuesday’s Green Plate Special:

Max Well Cafe

By way of MiNO Foundation, we welcome Max Well Cafe to the GPS every Tuesday in March. Born and raised in Mid-City and a graduate of Warren Easton High School, Alex Anderson grew up surrounded by the cultural influences that shape New Orleans. Her earliest memories include cooking alongside her grandmother and watching the care that goes into creating a meal. Those experiences in the kitchen with family shaped her passion for cooking and love for serving others.

Alex Anderson is amongst the most recent recipients of the Made in New Orleans scholarship. In 2016, someone Alex credits as “seeing more in me than I ever saw in myself” told her about the scholarship as her desire to learn and grow fueled her passion. While in New York studying at the International Culinary Center, Alex worked at the Michelin Star restaurant NIX, and it was during that time that she made the decision to be a lifelong vegan and devote her culinary career to that practice. Alex graduated in 2018 with honors from the International Culinary Center and is back in New Orleans to fulfill her vocation of serving the New Orleans vegan community. Alex’s culinary focus is centered around health and wellness, and she is currently the head chef at Max Well Cafe on Magazine Street.
