Our Work

In addition to our flagship Crescent City Farmers Market, Market Umbrella has developed several community-based initiatives to further its mission of cultivating the power of farmers markets to drive economic and community health in the region. Market Umbrella has expanded its outreach by partnering with other local markets and community health organizations to increase access to healthy, local food in New Orleans.

Market Match

We believe farmers markets should benefit farmers, shoppers, and the wider community. Through Market Match, we offer incentives to vulnerable consumers to purchase the best local produce available at our markets, Top Box Foods Louisiana, River Queen Greens, and Grow Dat Youth Farm.

Traditionally, Market Umbrella has matched up to $20 per market visit, but in recognition of the urgent food access need exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and Hurricane Ida, we are able to remove the cap and offer an unlimited dollar for dollar Match at all markets and partner locations beginning in January 2023. Meet Me at the Market

Meet Me at the Market is our farmers market field trip program that allows students to meet regional farmers, learn about our local food system, and taste new foods. We welcome teachers and students of all ages to meet us at our Uptown Tuesday market for a fun and informative visit with our staff and farmers. Learn more.

Market Mommas Club

Market Mommas Club is a breastfeeding incentive program open to lactating parents with a child up to 6 months old and parents-to-be who plan to breastfeed and are currently receiving or eligible for Louisiana Medicaid and/or WIC benefits. Parents are partnered with a breastfeeding peer group for support and can receive $60 for up to six months to shop at the Crescent City Farmers Market. Learn more.

Greaux the Good

Greaux the Good gives Louisiana direct-to-consumer food purveyors (such as farmers markets, farm stands, and CSAs) the opportunity to create or expand a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) nutrition incentive program. Greaux the Good provides food producers administrative and financial support to both accept and incentivize purchases made with SNAP/EBT or FMNP. Nutrition incentive programs attract high-need shoppers to local foodways and empowers them to purchase more fresh foods directly from local producers. This mutual exchange between farmers and the community positively impacts the state's agricultural economy and increases local food access. Learn more.

Marketeers Club

We believe that farmers markets grow healthy kids, and Marketeers Club instills a love for farmers markets and fresh food in the hearts and tummies of the next generation. In Marketeers Club, children ages 12 and under participate in monthly interactive activities, ranging from potting their own plants to playing with food! Marketeers also receive a special birthday gift. Learn more.

Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)

The Farmers Market Nutrition Program is a federal nutrition assistance program, administered in our state by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. The program assists seniors with low income and families that receive WIC as well as local farmers. Learn more.

SNAP Education

Market Umbrella is also dedicated to providing educational resources related to healthy eating, introducing shoppers to new ways to enjoy fresh, local food. Learn more.
