Ready, Set, GiveNOLA! | April 23, 2024

Fresh & Local:

Ready, Set, GiveNOLA!

May 7th, fast approaching, is GiveNOLA Day! New Orleans’ 24-hour day of community giving! Join your friends and neighbors in supporting local non-profit organizations making a difference in our community - like Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market!

Early giving begins today, April 23rd! Which means that you can show your appreciation for CCFM and extend support to all of the community programs that we operate here at Market Umbrella. GiveNOLA Day gifts will support the future and growth of Market Umbrella and allow us to continue connecting you with local, fresh food. Contributions will enable us to increase food access through programs like Market Match (which is available at all markets, through the CCFM home delivery box, and at partner locations across the city) that doubles the buying power of many families in our community. As many in New Orleans - and beyond - are experiencing a monumental increase in food insecurity, your support is appreciated now more than ever.

Just as our farmers are planting the seeds for the next harvest, you too can plant your seeds of support for Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market with a donation! Gifts can be scheduled NOW! through May 7th, so please make a gift and grow with us!

Happy Passover

Passover began yesterday at sundown, and ends at sunset on Tuesday, April 30th. Those who observe the holiday abstain from eating all leavened foods, like bread and bagels. Instead, they eat matzoh - an unleavened, cracker-like bread. Oh matzoh! Some love you, some hate you, but arguably the biggest debate around this time of year revolves around matzoh brei. Eggs and smashed matzoh transform into a tender, carby treat that is a popular breakfast in Jewish households during Passover. The controversy comes in around toppings— sweet, or savory? Some like butter and salt; others go for jams and syrups. One thing we can all agree on is that matzoh brei is delicious. Check out the recipe below and let us know what market toppings you like best! And, as soon as it’s time to break bread, we’ll see you in line for a bagel fix from Leo’s

The Bluebs are Back in Town

Dear Strawberries, thank you for your service! Your bounty was plentiful this season and you put a sweet smile on all of our faces. With strawbs beginning to wrap up their season, that must mean one thing… Bluebs are about to hit the market! Did you catch superstar J&D Blueberry Farm on the local news? Don shares that this blueberry season is going to be full of life and that you can expect to see their bounty in markets by June. Though you won’t have to wait that long, because Johndales Farm is debuting their bluebs at this week’s markets!

Hurray for the Riff Raff, Approved!

Alynda Segarra, the acclaimed singer-songwriter behind Hurray for the Riff Raff, was interviewed for a feature in EATER New Orleans and gave CCFM an iconic shout-out!

“I’m a big farmers market nerd. During lockdown when everything was really scary, I started to dive into the farmers markets in New Orleans. There are so many amazing farmers in the city, from Louisiana and also from Mississippi. My favorite is the one by the bayou on Thursdays — Leo’s Bread is there, they make incredible bread; River Queen Greens is there and they have amazing greens and vegetables. There’s really good tofu there by Veggi Farmers Cooperative.” We agree!

Chickadee Natives

Chickadee Natives returns to the Thursday market for the spring season starting this week!

Owner Charlsie Shaver began growing native plants in 2016 when she had her own landscaping business that focused on natives and pollinator habitats. Six years later, Charlsie decided to focus solely on the nursery side of the business and began Chickadee Natives in yet another New Orleans backyard. These days, she spends her time combing the city and countryside, collecting seeds from imperiled populations, then propagating them to bring customers a diverse array of locally adapted native plants. Focusing on local genetics helps preserve the genetic diversity of species and ensures that they will remain resilient in the face of change. Charlsie believes in the power of the home gardener to have a positive impact on the health of local ecosystems, and she looks forward to expanding her offerings.

Recipe of the Week:

Matzo Brei + Strawberry Jam

Matzah, matzoh, matzo - with many ways to spell the name of the unleavened Passover bread, there are just as many ways to prepare Matzo Brei (pronounced like fry). Sweet, salty, or a mix of both, there has always been a debate over the best toppings. My family likes cinnamon sugar, but I secretly sneak in ketchup sometimes. I know… (Shhh emoji) Either way you can’t go wrong! Check out this week’s recipe to learn how to get it perfectly crisp and delicious, and teaches you how to make jam from market berries!
