Fresh & Local:

Fire Up Those Grills

Happy July 4th and happy National Grilling Month! The Thursday Mid-City Market will be closed this week as it falls on the July 4th holiday, so we wanted to leave you with some ideas on how you can stay cool and enjoy your day in the sunshine. If you haven’t already, this is a great time to fire up those grills for the summer. Grab some pork chops from T&R Dairy, catfish from Pete & Clara’s Seafood, or tofu from Veggi Co-Op to skewer with summer squash, zucchini, and peppers from the Monica’s or LA Gourmet Produce. Finish off your meal with grilled peach halves from Cherry Creek Orchard, served with a melty scoop of ice cream from T&R Dairy and you’ll truly be in the summer spirit!

While we’re closed Thursday the 4th, we’ll be back this Sunday for the City Park Market from 8 am to 12 pm.

Good Food Word of the Week:

While Market Umbrella is known for our farmers markets and fresh food access programs, food systems work touches on many social, economic, and environmental issues. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on these parts of our work and the way we talk – demystifying the jargon.

good food word

Hydroponic

Hydroponic farming refers to a growing technique in which plants are grown without soil. Instead, the roots are submerged in a nutrient-rich water bath. Hydroponic growing has been adopted by both commercial farmers and home gardeners as a way to efficiently deliver nutrients to growing plants while using less space and less water than traditional techniques. At CCFM, you may find hydroponic lettuces or heirloom tomatoes!

Our Friend, Seafood Ice Dog!

Yes, you read that right. His name is BOOGIE! Boogie Foster, better known around the market as Seafood Ice Dog, makes his weekly appearance at the Tuesday Uptown Crescent City Farmers Market in his cold vest to cool off in Chris Gerica's discarded ice from Pete and Clara’s Seafood booth. Chris, a fourth generation fisherperson and dog loving personalized gift maker, says the Fosters have been bringing their poodles to the market for nearly 30 years for an ice roll around.  Seafood Ice Dog’s owners, Steve and Myra, said it's become a tradition for them to visit the Tuesday CCFM with all of their poodles, including Boogie's predecessor, Cricket.

Marketeers this Sunday, the 7th!

It’s the first Sunday of the month, which means it’s time for a Marketeers Club meet-up! Calling all creative, energized young minds. We’re building racecars with summer squash and other seasonal vegetables. Race against one another at the market and then take home your cars to eat! Hope to see you there.

Barcelo Gardens is a community garden and Farmer's Market in New Orleans’ the Upper 9th ward. Our goal is to bring fresh produce (and other food related items) to places that are food deserts, and adding new partners helps make this a reality across the city. Barcelo Gardens believes that everyone deserves to have food access, not just people in the right zipcode. Click here to learn more about Market Match and all of our partners!

Recipe of the Week:

Grilled Mexican Corn (Elote)

This fantastic grilled elote recipe is a great way to  elevate something simple like corn and feel like you’re eating at a restaurant in your own home! Juicy, sweet and salty, and as spicy as you like it. You’ll need napkins on deck for this dish but that’s what makes summer eating fun. Get messy, who cares!

In this recipe you can get corn from Indian Springs Farmers Association, Johndale Farms or Joe Fekete Family Farm and perilla leaves from Veggi Co-op as a substitute for cilantro, which prefers cooler fall and spring temps.
