Back 2 School Snax | August 20, 2024

Fresh & Local:

Back 2 School Snax

It’s August, which means the children are heading back to school. Send them off with yummy snacks using fresh and local ingredients from the Crescent City Farmers Market! One of our favorites is crudités, raw cut veggies paired with a dipping sauce. This dish is quick, easy, and can be customized for each kiddo and any season! Plus, it can be made quickly for those late mornings when you and the family are in a rush.

Thanks to the variety of fresh, seasonal veggies always readily available in-market, this dish is never boring! Cut crudités using fresh green beans, sweet peppers, summer squash, and even okra! If you’re feeling fancy, you can toss in heirloom cherry tomatoes and some pickles. For the dip, try one of Isabel’s creamy salsas, or stop by T&R Dairy for yogurt and Sassy Cajun Spices for seasonings to make your own spinach or artichoke style dip. No matter the taste buds, the Crescent City Farmers Market has something to make your child’s next afternoon snack tasty, fresh, and unique!

Good Food Word of the Week:

While Market Umbrella is known for our farmers markets and fresh food access programs, food systems work touches on many social, economic, and environmental issues. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on these parts of our work and the way we talk – demystifying the jargon.

good food word

Whole Food

Whole foods are unprocessed and free from additives - it’s the antonym for processed foods. If you’re looking to add more whole foods to your diet, search for things that can go straight from a field to your plate without any steps in between. Options include vegetables, fruits, nuts, and sustainably-sourced meats and fish.

Meet Jackie

When it comes to friends, the Crescent City Farmers Market has plenty - from all species! Have you seen Jackie in the market? Perched upon their caretakers shoulder, Jackie helps put a smile on everyone’s face who walks through the market. Birds are so cool, y’all.

Market Umbrella at ADCES

Last week, Market Umbrella presented at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists conference, an organization dedicated to advancing the quality of diabetes care and education.

Kasey Shy, Director of Healthy Food Access Programs, and Jas Tucker, Healthy Food Access Program Manager, presented a poster titled Enhancing Diabetes Education with a Produce Prescription: A Multi-Sector Partnership in New Orleans, sharing our collaborative approach to addressing food security in a Food is Medicine program. Partners included Top Box Foods, CrescentCare, Dillard University, and the Center for Nutrition and Health Impact.

Kasey and Jas enjoyed the conference and had lots of great conversations with conference attendees!
