Hey Mommas and New Parents! | September 17, 2024

Fresh & Local:

Hey Mommas and New Parents!

Enrollment for the next Market Mommas Club has begun! Market Mommas Club is a breastfeeding incentive program open to lactating parents with a child up to 6 months old and parents-to-be who plan to breastfeed and are currently receiving or eligible for Louisiana Medicaid and/or WIC benefits. Parents are partnered with a breastfeeding peer group for support and receive a $60 monthly incentive to shop at the Crescent City Farmers Market.

Participating in MMC provides new parents and parents-to-be an opportunity to connect with other breastfeeding families and shop at the market for fresh, local produce. This cohort is for new parents that haven’t participated in the Market Mommas Club before. Spanish interpretation is available at most Market Mommas Club meetups.

The enrollment period is Monday September 16th through Sunday September 22nd. Visit marketumbrella.org/our-work/market-mommas to learn more and apply today!

Not Your Average Omega

Here in Southeastern Louisiana, we take pride in the quality of our local seafood and the people who bring it to our CCFM markets. Whether you love boiled shrimp, baked catfish, or raw oysters, seafood is not only delicious, it is sustainably caught and nutritious! Finfish and shellfish are rich sources of the essential fatty acid, Omega 3, which is necessary for both cardiovascular health and brain function. Essential means it is not manufactured by our body so we must obtain it from foods we eat. An important nutrient for everyone, it is especially important for expecting and breastfeeding mothers and the USDA recommends two servings of seafood a week. CCFM has the catch of the day covered with a variety of fish and other local seafood available at all three weekly markets.

If you are a Medicaid or WIC eligible mom new to breastfeeding (or know someone who is), Market Mommas Club enrollment is open now through Sunday, September 22nd! Connect with other breastfeeding moms for lactation support during your breastfeeding journey and receive $60 monthly to shop at the Crescent City Farmers Market.

Congrats, Tiffany, our new SNAP-Ed Program Manager!

Big congrats to Tiffany on her promotion to SNAP-Ed Program Manager! You've probably seen her hard at work at our markets, running seasonal tastings, recipe demos, Marketeers activities, and more at the programs tent. As a master gardener and community nutrition educator, Tiffany is the perfect fit to lead our SNAP-Ed programs. Her market favorite? The butterfly pea flowers from Veggi Co-op—they make a refreshing tea that she can't get enough of! Click here to learn more about Tiffany and the rest of our awesome team!

Employing principles of indoor cultivation and the use of organic rye grain, soy hills, and oak hardwood sawdust, the farm specializes in Oyster mushrooms, Lion’s Mane, and King Trumpets among other varieties. The farm’s mission is to grow culinary interest in all types of mushrooms while raising awareness of a broad array of health benefits related to including mushrooms in the diet.

Recipe of the Week:

Crowder Peas w/ Collards & Tomatoes

Crowder peas are a rich, nutty, and savory type of cowpeas that have a bit more depth & subtle sweetness than their cousins, pinto and black-eyed peas. You can pick up crowder peas from Johndales Farm at the market and make this delicious, belly warming dish.
