Let’s go to LaSAWG 2019 | September 9, 2019

Fresh & Local:

Let’s go to LaSAWG 2019

Louisiana’s Sustainable Agriculture Working Group or LaSAWG for short, is an annual meeting to work on statewide sustainable agriculture issues. As a Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) recognized market, you can bet we’ll be there. This event provides producers, researchers, information providers, concerned consumers and community organizers the opportunity to learn and share about sustainable farming techniques and marketing strategies, build networks, strengthen alliances, and celebrate the achievements of Southern sustainable farmers. Together states from the region meet once per year at the Southern SAWG conference - to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2020.

Join us September 10 & 11 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans (2903 Jefferson Ave, New Orleans, LA 70115) for two days of sharing, learning and networking around sustainable agriculture efforts in Louisiana! You can find sliding scale one or two day tickets here.

And don’t miss the mixer after the conference on Tuesday connecting farmers and chefs. Light bites from Beets N’ Thyme and drinks will be provided, as well as live music from The Swamp Blossoms at the Mosquito Supper Club located at 3824 Dryades St, New Orleans, LA 70115 from 5:30pm-7pm! RSVP here!

My Kingdom for a Fungi

Neither plant nor animal, the noble mushroom has a kingdom all its own. Considered by the ancient Romans as the “Food of the Gods”, this humble decomposer is packed full of B vitamins, copper, selenium and potassium. If you’ve been purchasing your ‘shrooms at the grocery, you’ve probably been limited to only a few varieties… the ubiquitous white button, cremini and portabella. At CCFM, you can find wood-cultivated, exotic varieties like oyster, lion’s mane, or pioppino as well as wild-foraged chanterelles! Swing by our Tuesday,Thursday or Friday markets and see what our “fun-guys” Screaming Oaks or Mycelium Express have to offer. Plus, check out our recipe below for lion’s mane “crabcakes”!

It saddens us to announce that Rob and Suzie of Windfield Farm Bakery are saying goodbye after 25 long and beautiful years of baking for their cherished customers at the Crescent City Farmers Market. Their last market with CCFM will be Tuesday, October 1st. On this day, we will witness the birth of a new generation of bakers as the Bancks pass their bakery on to their son and daughter in law. Come say goodbye to Rob and Suzie and hello to the new faces of Windfield Farm Bakery. They’ll have all the ooey gooeys, morning glory muffins, and famous Rob advice ready for you - just the way you remember.

Mushroom Crab Cakes

Call ‘em fungi. Call ‘em mushrooms. We call them delicious!! Considered the “meat” of the vegetable world, mushrooms have meaty flavor and texture similar to crab and lobster making them the perfect star for your main dish. Check out this cool take on the crab cake using lion’s mane mushrooms. The eggs and onions needed can also be picked up at market!

What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter!
