#GivingTuesdayNow with CCFM | May 4, 2020

Fresh & Local:

Keep On Drivin’ On

Believing that generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad, #GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place tomorrow, May 5, 2020 as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. This movement aims to create a wave of generosity, citizen engagement, action from business and philanthropy, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

#GivingTuesdayNow also marks the kickoff to the GiveNOLA Day giving window - you can make a scheduled gift today that will count towards New Orleans’ own upcoming community giving event which will culminate on June 2! Please, take a moment now and make a donation to help ensure Market Umbrella has the critical resources needed to respond to new challenges and new opportunities in our local food system. Your support is particularly needed as we navigate these unprecedented times that are giving new meaning to our mission of public markets for public good. Your gift will not only support the future and growth of the organization but also will allow us to continue to facilitate aggregated produce box deliveries; organize drive thru, pick up markets; and offer programs like Market Match (which is available for both the delivery box and drive thru markets) that doubles the buying power of vulnerable families in our community. Please, join us tomorrow and donate!

Good Food Word of the Week:

While Market Umbrella is known for our farmers markets and fresh food access programs, food systems work touches on many social, economic, and environmental issues. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on these parts of our work and the way we talk - demystifying the jargon.

Urban agriculture

This week’s Good Food Word is Urban agriculture - Most of us imagine farms as wide open fields in the countryside, but farming can also take place in the middle of cities. Urban agriculture transforms empty lots or even rooftops into viable fields, increasing the accessibility of fresh, healthy produce in cities while educating communities on food production, cutting down on food miles, creating green space and permeable surfaces… the list of benefits goes on and on. CCFM hosts several urban growers such as Grow Dat Youth Farm, VEGGI Farmers Coop, River Queen Greens, Know Dat Grow Dat, Powers Beekeepers and our featured vendor of the week (CCFM box partner and Drive Thru participant) SPROUT NOLA.

Picks of the Week:

CCFM Drive Thru

These markets are PRE-ORDER ONLY – orders open Wednesdays at 11 pm and close Fridays at 11 pm! Click here for more information on the vendor line-up, offerings, ordering and pickup process.

Feed the Second Line

Last week Market Umbrella packed our first round of 70 fresh fruit and vegetable boxes going out to culture bearers of New Orleans through Feed the Second Line, a partnership between Krewe of Red Beans, New Orleans Musician’s Clinic & Assistance Foundation, Preservation Hall Foundation and Rouses Markets. This new program safely gets fresh, local food, pantry staples, prepared foods and personal/household supplies to New Orleans culture bearers - musicians, Social Aid and Pleasure Club members, Mardi Gras Indians, artists, and other cultural figures - and supports local farmers at the same time! Learn more and support this work at: feedthesecondline.org

recipe of the week

Recipe of the Week:

Sheet Pan Roasted Chicken and Cabbage

Sheet pan dinners are simple fixes when you’d like a hearty home-cooked meal but don’t feel like spending hours making it. This chicken and cabbage recipe is as easy as it is delicious: the cabbage roasts in the chicken fat, rendering it soft and caramelized. Feel free to switch up the seasonings (a sprinkle of Tony’s, perhaps?) and get creative with the ingredients— some sliced spring fennel or other veggies would work wonders here. Enjoy!

What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter!
