CCFM Celebrates National Breastfeeding Month with Signature Market Mommas Club | August 10, 2020

Fresh & Local:

CCFM Celebrates National Breastfeeding Month
with Signature Market Mommas Club

CCFM supports and celebrates moms that breastfeed! The CCFM Market Mommas Club provides lactating mommas with incentives to purchase fresh produce that will provide those extra healthy calories needed to keep baby’s belly full. Enrollment is open! Learn more here about how to receive benefits and connect to lactation support and a supportive community.

Being a mom to a new baby or young child is a multi-faceted experience that requires body, mind and soul. And, despite the common perception that breastfeeding is easy and comes naturally, it can be a giant hurdle of early motherhood. In an effort to raise awareness and support breastfeeding, CCFM proudly honors National Breastfeeding Month.

Good Food Word of the Week:

In addition to running farmers markets, a critical component of Market Umbrella’s work is to enhance food and nutrition access and awareness in our community. The Good Food Word of the Week seeks to shed some light on this part of our work and also to demystify the jargon.

good food word

Galactagogue

This week’s Good Food Word is Galactagogue – “Galacta-what?” you may have thought. Or maybe you didn’t. In which case, this post’s for you! Galactagogues are substances that naturally promote breast milk production. While all breastfeeding moms should consume plenty of nutrient rich fruits and vegetables, these are some foods that are considered to be galactagogues that can be found at market when they’re in season: dark, leafy greens like kale and spinach, fennel, garlic, ginger, papaya, and spices like cumin seeds, anise seeds, fennel seeds, and turmeric. Check out our Recipe of the Week for a galactagogue inclusive recipe!

A Special Thank You to Market Mommas Club Funder, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation

Market Umbrella’s ability to offer critical food access and nutrition programs like Market Mommas Club and Market Match is made possible by the generosity of philanthropic partners and donors. The W. K. Kellogg Foundation is a longtime supporter of Market Umbrella, and their commitment to our community has been instrumental in helping to expand access to fresh, local healthy food and improve nutrition throughout the New Orleans area. You, too, can help us build a stronger, healthier community by making a donation to Market Umbrella today! Your gift will support continued market operations as well as programs like these - a meaningful investment in the health and future of our community! Thank you!

Pandemic EBT

Pandemic EBT was made available to households participating in the Free and Reduced Priced Meal Program in June. Intended to fill the gap of meals that would have been received while attending school, P-EBT benefits remain valid and the card works just like traditional SNAP (formerly known as food stamps). Yep, that means you can use it to shop at CCFM… and P-EBT purchases are also eligible for CCFM’s Market Match doubling incentive!

Despite extending the application deadline, over 259,000 eligible school children were unable to take advantage of this program and apply. Market Umbrella, along with 26 other community organizations, have signed a letter to Governor Edwards to reopen enrollment for the program to include the households unable to apply before the deadline or unaware the benefits were even available. If your household needs a little extra help getting meals on the table for school-aged children, there are resources available. Find them here.

Cabbage Leaf Therapy

Brand new baby? Tight, full breast? Baby having trouble latching on? You may have “first week engorgement” or any number of difficulties that are common to the breastfeeding experience. The farmers market is here to help - just pick up a cabbage! Peel off one or more leaves, crumple each leaf gently in your hand, and put the leaves on your breast. They should feel nice and cool, and can be held in place with a bra or shirt. Leave them on until you get tired of them, and repeat as often as you like. Need a little extra relief? Pop the leaves in the freezer first. While cabbage is currently out of season, this tip is just too good not to mention so keep it in mind for fall!

vendor of the week

Vendor of the Week:

Paul’s Palate

It’s “QUITTIN’ TIME” for one of our beloved vendors - Paul’s Palate. At the end of August, former vendor representative Paul Arceneaux and his homemade pestos and soups - often made with produce he grew himself - will be retiring after 20 years. Don’t miss your chance to say a distanced and masked goodbye to Paul! Paul will be at the Tuesday, Uptown market through August 25th. We will surely miss his famous cheese logs, early morning coffee shakes, camaraderie and commitment to the Crescent City Farmers Market. Live long and prosper, Paul!
