Fresh Food for the Holidays! | November 14, 2022

Fresh & Local:

Fresh Food for the Holidays!

As the holidays approach, stop by the Crescent City Farmers Market to stock up on local produce for all of your favorite recipes! Whether you need sweet potatoes for your signature holiday baked goods, cheese for a hearty casserole, or a bunch of greens to make a heart-warming side dish, CCFM vendors are coming into fall harvest season and have brought plenty to the markets for you to enjoy! Need to take a little off your proverbial plate this busy season? No need to make your own dessert when you can get sweet treats like flaky, golden-brown, chocolate croissants from Leo’s Bread; generous slices of cinnamon-y coffee cake with a layer of tart, fresh Honeycrisp apples from Passion Flour Bakery; or pumpkin or pecan pies from Re:Borne Bakery for a scrumptious gluten-free and vegan riff on the more traditional holiday desserts.

There’s something for everyone at market; fill your table and your spirit with the freshest foods around! The Thursday market will be closed on November 24, so be sure to stock up when you’re at the market on Sunday, November 20 or Tuesday, November 22. Check our website beforehand to see which vendors will be at market!

We need your support in the year ahead!

For over 25 years, Market Umbrella has supported Southeast Louisiana foodways and culture, serving as a small business incubator, working to uplift the local economy, and providing food access programs to help all New Orleanians have greater access to fresh, local foods. As 2022 comes to a close, we are feeling hopeful and excited about all that we can accomplish in the new year ahead. From offering more programming at markets to the new Greaux the Good state-wide Market Match program and so much more, we are committed to giving back to the region we call our home.

Please take a moment and join us in building a stronger, healthier, more resilient community and make a contribution now by donating online or texting CCFM to 44-321. Your tax deductible gift to Market Umbrella will fund operations and programs and help ensure that our markets and programs stay strong in the year ahead.

Greaux the Good Announces the Market Advisory Committee!

Louisiana’s new statewide Market Match nutrition incentive program, Greaux the Good, has finalized its Market Advisory Committee (MAC). The committee members are from prominent organizations throughout Louisiana including BREADA - Red Stick Farmers Market, Fightingville Fresh Market, LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Central, and Shreveport Farmers’ Market. Vendor of the Week:

River Queen Greens

River Queen Greens is back at the Thursday market! Come on by our Mid-City market and shop with Cheryl Nunes and Annie Moore, the farmers behind River Queen Greens! Starting in 2017, River Queen Greens began providing New Orleans with Certified Naturally Grown seasonal produce and microgreens from their 1/2 acre market garden in the Bywater. Since then, they have moved to a new growing site in Lower Coast Algiers on New Orleans' West Bank. Ten miles down river from downtown New Orleans and across the street from the Mississippi River levee, their expanded location juxtaposes small-scale agriculture with global industry. In addition to their weekly set up at our market, they offer a choice-based farm-share veggie box that you can pick up from Press Street Gardens in the Bywater/Marigny on Tuesday evenings! Just like at the market, SNAP and Market Match are accepted! Find River Queen Greens’ table of fresh veggies every week at our Thursday market!

Recipe of the Week:

Harvest Salad

Few foods highlight the textures, tastes, and beauty of fresh fruits and vegetables as much as a harvest salad! Add roasted squash and a handmade dressing for maximum deliciousness! Try this staff-favorite recipe from Southern Living. This salad is so gorgeous and bountiful you almost don’t want to take the first bite–but you’ll be glad you did!

What’s your favorite dish to make after visiting the Crescent City Farmers Market? Share your recipes with us on Instagram or Facebook and it might be featured in our weekly newsletter!
