Fresh & Local:

Y’all Means All

Happy National Pride Month! At Crescent City Farmers Market, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ farmers and vendors at market and across the region who promote a more inclusive food system. Activism, sustainable farming, and co-operative land management are only a few ways queer farmers redefine agriculture. In addition to environmental and economic impacts of this work, LGBTQ+ farmers strive to make significant impacts in the equity of our food systems.

Access to land and the capital to develop on it create a significant barrier to entry. Queer farmers challenge conventional norms in agriculture and help create space for other food producers that identify as LGBTQ+ to safely and authentically farm. While the LGBTQ+ community – the trans community especially – still faces many challenges, we are excited to see the positive shifts in agriculture as LGBTQ+ farmers and food producers help create a more nourishing world. Support queer farmers by buying their products.

June is National Dairy Month

Did you know that June is National Dairy Month? Today, Louisiana ranks 41 in the nation for dairy production, with Mississippi close behind at 42. Only 100 years before, central Mississippi was known as the “Milk Pitcher of the South.” Estimates show that Mississippi had more than ten thousand dairy farms but there are fewer than one hundred open today. This decline is not unique to our area and you can read plenty about how “go big or go home” dairy farm consolidation over the last few decades has put small scale producers out of business, and didn’t work out so well for the big guys either, and also the negative environmental impact that this push toward factory farming has resulted in. This month we urge you to celebrate National Dairy Month by supporting small scale dairy producers at CCFM. Vendors like Huckleberry’s Creamery, our featured Vendor of the Week, or Mary from the multi-generation T&R Dairy Farm bringing milk, buttermilk, chocolate milk, artisan cheeses, and the best yogurt to all three weekly markets. It’s easy when it tastes so much better than anything you’d get in the store, and is cost competitive!

Vendor of the Week:

Huckleberry’s Creamery

You can find everything from marinated feta, to cheesecake, to farm-fresh eggs at Huckleberry Creamery’s table. Established in 2019, Huckleberry’s Creamery is a Louisiana Certified dairy farm based in Franklinton, Louisiana. They produce a creamy array of goat cheeses with flavors ranging from buffalo to honey cranberry. They also carry creole cream cheese, a traditional New Orleans farmer's cheese, at their table! Goat’s milk has often been sought out for its health benefits as it contains less lactose, and smaller fat globules, and is richer in protein - than traditional cow’s milk. It’s also delicious! Goat cheese is a great addition to salads, pizza, pasta, or any dish. Find Huckleberry’s Creamery at our Sunday and Thursday markets, or any time you hear us mention baby goats! Be sure to stay tuned for the addition of corn grits and cornmeal to their table.
