Summer Celebrations All Around | June 26, 2023 |
Fresh & Local:Summer Celebrations All AroundThe Summer Solstice marked the first day of summer last week. Summer is hot in New Orleans, and we all deserve a treat. That’s why Top Box Foods Louisiana created a special Summer Celebration Box, just in time for the Fourth of July! This box is filled with ingredients to make a tasty grilled salad. You can customize your order by adding chicken, shrimp, or extra veggies. The box is $15 + your choice of add ons. Plus, they’re Market Match partners, so the boxes are half-priced when purchased using SNAP. Top Box Food’s products feature fresh fruits and vegetables, high-quality meats, seafood, and local products delivered right to your door! Click here to shop Top Box today and receive yours by Independence Day. Market tours to help shoppers make the most of the markets now that the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) is in full swing are scheduled for Tuesday's Uptown market tomorrow and Thursday's Mid-City market on the 29th. They will highlight how to plan, shop, prepare, and store Market Match-eligible produce. The 4th of July is a Tuesday this year, and we’ll have music by the Tangiers Combo, and a free watermelon tasting, and be sure to get to market earlier for a sample of Black Creek Farm’s sausage that they’ll be grilling up on-site! Visit our page for the event for more details. Stop by from 8 am – 12 pm to pick up some local yummies and celebrate Independence Day with CCFM! |
We’re Hiring a State Organic Agriculture CoordinatorPart of Market Umbrella’s work in food systems involves partnership in the Louisiana Small Scale Agriculture Coalition (LSSAC). Along with SPROUT NOLA, Louisiana Central, BREADA, NOLA Food Policy Action Council, Shreveport Green, and the Acadiana Food Alliance, LSSAC works to strengthen our food system and support local growers. One endeavor of LSSAC is a recent grant to fund a shared State Organic Agriculture Coordinator. This individual will be based in Central Louisiana and help farmers across the state explore and adapt organic growing practices. This collaboration is unique to our region and significant because Louisiana has not had a state organic certifier for years, indicative of disinvestment in sustainable agriculture. The creation of this position demonstrates a positive shift in our priorities as a state to meet our community’s evolving values and the urgent crisis of climate change. View the job details here, and please help us spread the word! |

Thank You Tulane DoctorsLet’s hear it for Tulane Doctors! Thank you to Tulane Doctors for their sponsorship of our recent Moonlight Market fundraiser! We applaud their collaborative approach to care, driven by research that pushes medicine to new heights. Tulane Doctors is the only Tier 1 research institution in the Gulf South. They educate the next generation of physicians and create the future of healthcare by healing people and elevating the definition of care. We are partners in public health, committed to improving access to resources for folks to improve their health in New Orleans. An apple a day keeps the doctor away? A diet rich in fresh, healthy food can help make your doctor’s visits easier, especially if you have a Tulane Doctor. |
Vendor of the Week:Cicada Calling FarmWith a bountiful display of bright bouquets, canned goods, melons, squash, eggplant, and more, it’s difficult to miss the Cicada Calling tent when they are at market. Run by Becks Hilliard & Sierra Torres, Cicada Calling is a 2-acre diversified vegetable and cut flower farm in Southeast Louisiana. As two young farmers from Louisiana, Becks & Sierra believe farming in the Gulf South is an act of resistance towards a disappearing community that has been ravaged by climate change and the petrochemical industry. Their beliefs are evident in their practice: they are a no-till, naturally grown farm and source a majority of their seed from cooperative seed growers in the South as a means of growing food better adapted to our climate and to increase the seed biodiversity of our region. For Becks & Sierra, Cicada Calling Farm is not just a business, but an intentional decision to invest in a future for Louisiana and create alternative economies, structures, and systems to support, heal, and nourish our community. Swing on by Thursday or Sunday market and check out Cicada Calling! |
Recipe of the Week:Cucumber, Tomato, and Herb SaladSummer is officially here! This light and refreshing cucumber, tomato, and herb salad by Louisiana Cookin is the perfect summer side or starter. It’s bursting with color and flavor, beautifully showcasing a plethora of seasonal produce! It’s hot as fish grease out there! Rehydrate your body with these crunchy, juicy veggies (and fruits) and enjoy this stove-free meal! Fat Cat Farms, a new vendor at the Thursday Mid-City Market, has tarragon right now. She says people come in search of it, so try to arrive early to get your hands on some herbaceous goodness. Find as many ingredients in the recipe as you can at market, and you can substitute the fontina cheese for marinated feta or flavored goat cheese from Huckleberry Farms or T&R Dairy’s fresh mozzarella!
