Figs n’ Fourth at Market! | July 3, 2023

Fresh & Local:

Figs n’ Fourth at Market!

Join the Crescent City Farmers Market for a Fourth of July celebration at the Tuesday Uptown Market! Bring your friends and family to see the festivities and support local food producers! Fresh sweet potatoes, summer peas, okra, melon, and corn from local vendors are in season. We’ll offer free watermelon samples while supplies last. Try a bite, so you know the walk home carrying your big, tasty watermelon will be well worth it. And be sure to get to market earlier for a sample of Black Creek Farm’s sausage that they’ll be grilling up on-site! Casa Borrega owner Hugo Montero, from our Green Plate Special Series a few years back, will join us once again to whip up a dish for market.

In addition to all the festive eats, we will have music by The Tangiers Combo from 9:30 – 11:30 am. The festivities will take place at our Uptown Market on Tuesday, July 4 from 8 am to 12 pm. With Market Match, double your SNAP dollars at market and take home even more fresh, in-season fruits and veggies. Visit the Uptown Fourth of July at Crescent City Farmers Market facebook page to stay up to date with the details. To keep track of this event and all our summer celebrations, visit our market events calendar.

Picks of the Week:

Second Annual Kitchenware Sale

Wondering what to do with that seasoned tea set collecting dust in your china cabinet?! We’ve got a solution! Market your calendar for our Second Annual Kitchenware Sale (August 8th)! In preparation for the sale, we invite you to clean out your kitchens and donate your gently used pots, pans, barware, small cooking appliances, cookbooks, serving utensils, and dishes to raise funds for Market Umbrella and the Crescent City Farmers Market! Donations will be accepted weekly at our Tuesday Uptown Market. Leave your kitchenware treasures at the welcome tent. For questions, email us at admin@marketumbrella.org.

The Beautiful Simplicity
in a Short Supply Chain

If you’re like us, you like to know where your seafood comes from. Shrimp produced overseas is likely produced with little oversight for environmental and human rights protections. Long-time Market Morsel readers may remember when the 2019 law passed that required Louisiana restaurants to disclose the country of origin for shrimp and crawfish on the menu. This law was intended to be a game changer for local fishermen who compete with low-priced imports and for customers who assume we’re eating local seafood at restaurants when, most of the time, we may not be. Since 2019, inspectors have recorded more than 2,600 violations of this law and have not levied any fines for the offenses. When we can’t be sure where our food comes from, we go straight to the source: the fisherfolk!

Meet Christina of Pete and Clara’s Seafood on Tuesdays and Thursdays; she continues her parents’ passion by selling seafood caught in Lake Pontchartrain or Lake Borne by her dad, Pete. You can take home whole shrimp, catfish, drum, and sheepshead filets, picked crab, and frozen peeled and deveined shrimp—ready to marinate and toss on the grill! On Sundays, Anna Marie Seafood brings shrimp, snapper, grouper, and other finfish. Owner and fisherman Lance Nacio has made expensive modifications to his practice to remain committed to environmentally responsible fishing methods. Shop from these fisherfolk to support their work to protect the environment and industry for the future, and when you know your fisherman, you can avoid eating contaminated shrimp!

Parking Reminders

At Crescent City Farmers Market, we are excited to welcome visitors to our markets! We want to create a safe and seamless experience for market participants and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods! When parking at market, please pay attention to nearby street signs for parking restrictions at each market. At our Thursday Mid-City Market, this includes no parking on the uptown side of Lafitte Avenue. For our Sunday City Park Market, there is no parking on Marconi Drive in areas with diagonal white parking lines or on the neutral ground (park there and you might find yourself with a ticket). Finally, at our Tuesday Uptown Market, customers may enter the Tulane parking lot from Broadway or Leake Ave. When parking at any market, please pay attention to any nearby street signs so that we may all continue to enjoy all market locations.

Vendor of the Week:

Figue Envie

Figue Envie is making their annual market appearance! Owners and fig farmers, Mandy and Byron met while serving in Mali as agricultural volunteers in the Peace Corp. Now the husband and wife are teachers in New Orleans, but they spend their summer vacations connecting with their farming roots. After tending to fig trees on family land since 2006, they purchased a new plot which has allowed them to quadruple their production. Figue Envie produces fresh figs, traditional fig preserves, as well as specialty flavors like Balsamic Fig Jam, Fig Pepper Jelly, and Autumn Spiced Fig Preserves. Figue Envie will only be at the market July 4th, 6th, 9th, and 11th, so be sure to stop by!
