Celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month | October 2, 2023 |
Fresh & Local:Celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage MonthNational Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month marks celebration and recognition of the experience and meaningful contributions of Hispanic & Latinx people to this world; this month of celebration lasts from September 15 thru October 15. There is such a rich history of Hispanic and Latinx people in New Orleans! As a port city, New Orleans has long been a site of trade with Latin America. Over the years, many people have migrated to New Orleans along these routes, bringing with them aquatic farming methods, polycultural crop-rearing, and many more agricultural practices that help us better protect and respond to the land and each other. At Crescent City Farmers Market, we are celebrating National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month by recognizing and uplifting the Hispanic/Latinx people in our community. This month, make sure you stop by Isabel’s Tamales and Produce for a wide array of produce, fresh chips, and delicious salsas. Swing by Amanda’s Frozen Fruit Bars for a sweet treat that beats the heat! Visit Latino Snacks for a cool Mangonada or hot Elote Loco. And new vendor, Casa Borrega grills sizzlin’ breakfast tacos on Tuesdays and Sundays! |

Roasted salsa tasting at marketLooking for a way to enjoy the savory and plump tomatoes of the market? Look no further! While celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we are happy to have a roasted salsa tasting and demonstration using the fresh ingredients found in the market on Thursday, October 12th, 2023. This recipe is jam packed with flavor, vitamins, and nutrients! Stop by the demo table to try samples, take home recipe cards, and see all of the fresh ingredients used from our vendors of the market. Recreating historical recipes and traditions helps us to celebrate and recognize the generations of Hispanic and Latino/Latinx Americans who have enriched our nation and our culture. |
Vendor of the Week:Latino SnacksLatino Snacks joined the Thursday Mid-City market in December 2022, where they now offer a range of rich, flavor-packed Latin American snacks! Karen De Paz, Latino Snacks’ owner, wanted to combine snacks from Honduras and other countries to give New Orleans a taste of Latin America. A little over two years ago, her idea brought Latino Snacks to life! Some of the specialty snacks you can expect to find at market every week include Elote Loco (Crazy Corn), Tajadas, Mangonadas, and Honduran-style hot dogs topped with cabbage salad, jalapeños, homemade dressing, pickled onions, and more! Visit Latino Snacks’ storefront at 2317 Veterans Blvd in Kenner or come visit them at the Thursday or Sunday markets! |

Recipe of the Week:Calabacin al Ajillo (Spanish Garlic Zucchini)This recipe for Spanish Garlic Zucchini is from Spain on a fork. They suggest that the secret to giving zucchini a great texture, is to season it with sea salt after you cut it and letting it sit for 30 minutes. This helps release some of the water in the zucchini, so when you fry it, it doesn't absorb as much oil and it keeps its texture. |
